Ulianov Chuvash State University, 15 Moskovsky Prospekt, Cheboksary, 428015, Russian Federation Abstract The history and prerequisites of the opening of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the Chuvash State University are considered. Training at the faculty for many years was aimed at training specialists in the field of mechanical processing and tooling design. The increased volume of designing modern types of automotive equipment for the concern “Tractor Plants” required the training of engineers to create transport equipment. To this end, the faculty has opened two new areas of training for students in the field of design of automotive equipment and mechatronics. The initial condition was the unification of personnel, intellectual and resource potentials of all departments of mechanical engineering and other faculties. The solution to these problems is proposed in the form of a comprehensive project to create an unmanned wheeled tractor for agricultural work.
