Marksa, Novosibirsk, 630073, Russian Federation Abstract This paper explores the possibilities of a two-stage milling technology for producing finefraction powders and spheroidizing their shape from 0.4 C-13 Cr steel chips. The first stage utilized 20 mm diameter balls, while the second used 6 mm balls, at various rotational speed ratios (k = 1; 1.5; 2). It was established that the first stage effectively reduces particle size, especially at k = 2, while the second stage (k = 1.5) promotes partial rounding but does not ensure perfect sphericity. Key problems were identified: particle agglomeration and insufficient plastic deformation due to the high hardness of the material. The main limitations of the method, associated with the high hardness of the material and the tendency of particles to agglomerate, are revealed. The data obtained are important for the development of energy-efficient technologies for recycling metallic waste into powder materials. Keywords Metal powders, planetary ball mill, two-stage milling, 0.4 C-13 Cr steel chips, spherical particles, mode optimization, milling.
