SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF HIGH SPEED TOOLS AFTER ELECTRO-DIAMOND MACHINING Popov V.Yu. , Ph.D. (Engineering), Associate Professor, e-mail: berkutoff@rambler.ru Bratsk State University, 40 Makarenko st., Bratsk, 665709, Russian Federation Abstract The purpose of this research was to determine efficient conditions for electrochemical grinding of tools from high speed steel with diamond grinding wheels based on metallic bonds. Technological characteristics of combined electro-diamond machining (CEDM) and their impact on the quality of the surface layer were established and theoretically grounded. The dependences of the machined surface roughness with regard to internal relations between electrical (dressing and etching currents) and mechanical factors were found during the experiments. The research has shown that the CEDM technology provides a low roughness (R a = 0.05 - 0.08 µm). The application of the CEDM technology in high-precision machining of advanced nanostructured and nanostrengthened materials promotes its further development.
