Marksa, Novosibirsk, 630073, Russian Federation Abstract Based on the eddy current transducer (ect) of the transformer type, an eddy current probe is developed to examine titanium plates joined by welding. The main specifications of the eddy current transducer (coil diameter and a core material of the wire) are given. The measurement procedure which makes it possible to test defects in titanium alloy welds is described. The concept of virtualized devices in which the eddy current transducer is controlled by a personal computer is used. The controlled parameter is the electric conductivity of the material and its distribution on the surface and across the thickness of the object. Experimental results obtained by the eddy current transducer using two welded titanium plates are presented. These results show the dependence of the response of the eddy current transducer on a defect in such structures. These dependencies help to determine the quality of the weld and to evaluate the reliability of welding. Keywords eddy current transducer, titanium, welds, nondestructive testing (NDT)
