Marksa, Novosibirsk, 630073, Russian Federation Abstract Cable cars, lifts, cable cranes and other transportation systems using cables to move goods, are widely used in remote and mountainous areas. To arrange a permanent "top-down" traffic the rope descent is most promising. Movement from the upper suspension point of the rope to the bottom of the receiving site is due to the gravity of the trolley and a load. A lack of mechanization of trolley movement along the rope makes transportation cheap and independent of the availability of power sources. It is necessary to ensure a certain shape of its movement trajectory for the load to get to the receiving site at a low speed. A load weight substantially affects the shape of its movement trajectory and the rope tensile force. The dependences of the sag and tension force of the elastic thread on the load position are obtained in the paper. A possibility of approximating the catenary line by parabola is proved to simplify the calculation of the movement trajectory of a load along the rope with a considerable span length and height difference in rope descent (1500 and 160 meters, respectively).
